The inch has ancient roots, it comes from the Latin word uncia, meaning one-twelfth of a whole. This unit was used in Roman times and later adopted in medieval England. In the 14th century, King Edward II of England defined an inch as the length of three barleycorns placed end to end. Over time, the inch became standardized, and today it's officially defined as exactly 2.54 centimeters.
